Routes To RIAT Official Campsite

There are four main colour coded public routes, all of which are intended to service the event from a

specific direction. Each route takes account of the proximity of the three main feeder motorways as below:

A. From the M5 to the west, traffic is directed onto the Green Route.

B. From the M4 to the south, dependent upon direction, traffic approaches via the Blue and Brown Routes.

C. From the M40/A40 to the northeast, traffic uses the Red Route.

‘One Way’ Traffic Orders may be in force: Do NOT use Sat Nav. Follow the directions below AND, unless advised otherwise, FOLLOW THE COLOUR CODED ROUTE SIGNS.

A. GREEN ROUTE

During certain peak times, there will be ‘one way’ restrictions in force in Whelford Road where the camp site is located, so for the purpose of finding the camp site, do not follow the Green Route signs.

To approach from this direction exit the M5 south at Junction 11A onto the A417(T) travelling up to the ‘Air Balloon’ roundabout, exiting at the second exit to Birdlip Hill, continuing towards Swindon and the M4. On the approach to Burford Road junction you will see Green Route signs indicating for you to exit. Do not exit, remain on the A419 (T).

Continue for 4.25m and take the next main exit to Down Ampney and Latton. You will at this point pick up other Green Route signs for the Alternate Green Route directing you left to Down Ampney, again ignore these signs.  Continue along the old Cirencester Road through Latton to the traffic island, then turning left onto the C124 which is the primary Blue Route.

Join this route and continue into Kempsford village as per Blue Route detailed in italics below.

B. BLUE AND BROWN ROUTES– Follow either Blue or Brown Route signs.

Blue Route: Approaching from the east along the M4 leave at Junction 15, and travel in a northerly direction on the A419 (T), which bypasses Swindon. Near Cricklade leave the A419 (T) onto the C124 towards Kempsford village and RAF Fairford, following Blue Route signs into the village of Kempsford.

From 0600hrs Friday 8th July until 2100hrs Sunday 10th July the village of Kempsford will be subject to a ‘One Way’ traffic order with traffic travelling clockwise around the village.

Whether you arrive before or after the one way system is in force, your direction will remain the same.

Upon reaching the outskirts of the village keep left following the road around the village in a clockwise direction. The entrance to the Blue Car Parks lies to the left, do not turn left to the Car Parks but continue on passing an entrance gate to the base on your left. Take the first turning left after this gate, sign-posted Whelford into Whelford Road The RIAT camp site exit gate will be approximately 300m on your right, with the entrance gate being approximately 600m further on.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If arriving between 0600hrs and 1300hrs Saturday or Sunday, Whelford Road will be the subject of a ‘One Way’ order allowing two lanes of vehicles to enter the car parks, therefore Whelford Road will be blocked off and Police controlled. Show your booking documentation received from the camp site and you will be permitted access. During these times the camp site ‘exit’ gate will also be utilized for ‘entry’.

Brown Route: Approaching from Bristol and the west via the M4 leave at Junction 17, and travel 6 miles north to Malmesbury, then to join the  B4040, travelling in an easterly direction for 7.5 miles before turning north on the B4696 for a further 5 miles (Spine Road East via Cotswold Water Park). It will pass over the A419(T) to join the old Cirencester Road to travel through Latton where this route joins the C124 Blue Route at a traffic island. From this traffic island follow the Blue Route directions detailed above.

C. RED ROUTE– Follow Red Route Signs

If approaching from the northeast M40/A40 take the A40 from Oxford to Burford, and then join the A361 to Lechlade, departing the town centre to the west along the A417.

Some 2.6miles west of Lechlade, turn left by the ‘Shell Garage’ travelling south along Whelford Road through the village of Whelford marked by 30and 40 mph restriction signs. RAF Fairford will be on the right.  As you approach the first slight right hand bend, the RIAT camp site entrance will be on the left.
